Drama in Pöls – man falls twelve meters down in climbing garden

Date:

Dramatic scenes took place on Monday in a climbing garden in Pöls (Styria): A 23-year-old man fell 12 meters uncontrollably for an unknown reason. He suffered so severe leg injuries that it was not possible to use a helicopter to rescue the deaf.

The 23-year-old Murtaler was with two friends (19, 20) in the sports climbing garden. After going through several climbing routes, the men finally tried the most difficult route around 8.30 pm: the so-called “Antihydral” with the difficulty wheel UIAA 9.

Error while saving?
According to a report from the Styria Police, they have hung the safety rope from above on an easier side route (toprope). After several attempts, the 19-year-old climbed this difficult route almost to the end. He was being held by his 20-year-old friend. Suddenly, however, the 23-year-old fell and fell about 40 feet to the ground uninhibited.

Emergency helicopter had to turn
The rescue of the deaf was not possible due to the serious leg injuries, so the rescue helicopter had to turn away again. Forces of the mountain rescue and fire brigade Pöls and an emergency doctor treated the Murtaler on the spot, he was transferred to the LKH Judenburg.

It is not clear at this time how the accident could have happened. The Alpine Police Murtal has launched an investigation. “For us, the focus is on the cause of the accident. We will reconstruct the facts. The illuminating question will be how the so-called security chain could be broken,” said Wolfang Murer of the Murtal Alpine Police.
