An American police officer could hardly believe his eyes when he stopped a speeder on a highway bridge in the state of Louisiana. Because the driver was none other than the chief of police of the state police. Instead of giving him a speeding ticket, the officer shakes hands with his superior and lets him drive on. The incident was captured on video (see above).
Police Chief Lamar Davis was driving on a stretch of road where the speed limit is 60 miles per hour. The policeman had not made a note, exactly how fast he was going when he stopped Davis. According to local media reports, it should have been more than 140 km/h.
“Gotta move my ass slowly”
“I made a mistake, I admit that. I take full responsibility,” Davis told local broadcaster WBRZ after the case became known. “I have to move my behind slowly,” he admitted succinctly. Nevertheless, the police officer’s conduct was consistent with Louisiana Police Department guidelines.
By letting him go with impunity, the policeman “used his discretion”, a police spokesperson defended the proceedings. Police have released images from the officer’s body camera. “Well, I’ll…” he can be heard saying before the officer turns off the camera. “Well, I’ll be damned” is an expression of extreme amazement.
The dashcam in the police car then continues to film the officer talking to Davis before they shake hands and both get back into their vehicle. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
Many speeder accidents on the bridge
The place Lamar Davis chose to romp is also spicy: the Atchfalaya Basin Bridge is a particularly dangerous part of Louisiana’s highway network, where hundreds of accidents occur every year, some of them fatal. Common cause of accidents: Excessive speed. Only recently the governor of the southern state of the US signed a law that would punish the grass on this stretch twice as much in the future.
