New satellite images – Putin prepares a conflict for the Finnish border

Date:

The Kremlin apparently started moving troops and military equipment to the border with Finland. New satellite images show that forces are brought together at three locations – and provide information about the long -term strategy of the Kremlin.

In particular, new tents, warehouses for military vehicles, renovated hiding places for fighter aircraft and construction work on a helicopter basis near Murmansk, a port city on the Arctic Circle, were registered. The previously dismantled Air Force Base Severomorsk-2 was re-used after two decades.

In Alakurti further south, about 50 kilometers from Finland, new buildings were built that offer space for numerous military vehicles. In Kamma near St. Petersburg, since last year, more than 130 tent accommodation for troops has been made on a reactivated basis from the time of the Cold War.

Images of the Satellite Company Planet Labs documented the gradual structure of the new infrastructure in the regions. “They are expanding their brigades to divisions, which means that the units near our borders will grow considerably – with thousands,” said military analyst Emil Kastehelmi of the “New York Times”. The structural changes are the first taste of what will come to Finland in the coming years.

Finland sees itself prepared
Military observers have talked since 2023 that the Kremlin is recovering the Soviet “Military District of Leningrad”. Together with his allies, “observes and evaluates and evaluates the activities and intentions of Russia,” Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen recently wrote in an e -mail at the AFP press office.

The new threats from Moscow are not “surprise” for Finland. “We have excellent skills to observe Russian operations,” wrote Häkkänen. Finland has a “robust national defense” based on military service and large spare staff. “Our entire society has extensively invested in preparing all types of disorders and crises,” he added.

Since the Vladimir Putin attack war on Ukraine, the relationship with the Scandinavians has steadily deteriorated. As a result, NATO joined the Long Alliance -Free Finland in April 2023. The boundary of the two countries extends over 1340 kilometers – and is therefore of excellent importance for the military alliance. In 2023, Finland also closed its border crossings after Moscow was accused of the specifically controlled migrant flows to destabilize the country.

The American General Christopher Cavoli recently explained to the US Senate that Russia is building his army faster than expected: “The power that is now fighting is greater than that at the start of the war.” About 30,000 new contract soldiers are currently recruited per month.

NATO strategists see a preparation for a time after the Ukraine war in the military building in the border region. This is interpreted as a sign that Russia adapts to a very long conflict. It is emphasized that an invasion is currently unlikely, because the process on the Russian side is still in an “early phase”.

It is currently assumed that Russia also wants to test the responsibility of NATO, including by hybrid tactics such as cyber attacks or airspace injuries.

An old Finnish saying says: Russia is never as strong as it seems, and never as weak as it seems. This ambivalence also becomes clear in the messages from Vladimir Putin. He rejected planned aggression against NATO countries as an “absolute nonsense”, at the same time he threatened military consequences after the accession of Finland.
