Glacier nurse Blaten – “We lost the village, but not our heart”

Date:

In Switzerland a glacier root buried on Wednesday parts of the mountain village of Blatten. A person missed late in the evening. “The unimaginable has arrived today. We lost the village, but not our heart,” said Matthias Bellwald, president of Blatten.

The Swiss federal President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed their sympathy for residents. “It’s bad if you lose your house.” Representatives of the government traveled to the disaster area on Wednesday evening and agreed with the affected community.

As reported, a glacier crashed in Switzerland on Wednesday afternoon and buried parts of the already evacuated village of Blatten in the Lötschental. The event was activated by a collision on the 3800 meter high Nesthorn above the glacier. This was relatively slow and was predicted by geologists. By crumbling, about nine million tons of debris has been on the glacier in recent days and exerted pressure on the ice mass.

Does it take years?
The natural disaster is historically “unprecedented,” said geologist Raphaël Mayoraz from the Canton Valais. The specialist warned that the danger to the valley has not yet been banned. Due to the demolition of the glacier, the Lonza River is stored strongly over a length of approximately two kilometers. Now there is a threat to a brain cracker and – with a greater chance – floods. It is therefore conceivable that people in other parts of the valley must also be evacuated.

About 300 residents should have left their houses more than a week ago. Some of them may now have completely lost. Various buildings were destroyed in the natural disaster, including wooden houses. The Swiss army was sent to the area to help with water transport. “We now have to stand together in the coming months, probably in the coming years,” said Defense Minister Martin Pfister when he got an idea of the situation.

Earthquake of strength 3.1 measured
According to the Swiss earthquake service, the earth was shaken on Wednesday with a thickness of 3.1. For that, larger amounts of ice, rock, snow and water had fallen on Tuesday evening.
