At the REM – Tempo 30 will soon submit an application on all municipal roads?

Date:

More and more places are confronted with speed reduction for more security. From 2026, Pinkafeld has been planting an extensive speed brake in Burgenland – with only a few exceptions.

It is slowly becoming serious for pace sinners: more and more communities in Burgenland are taking the emergency brake when it comes to fast driving on their streets. In the future, the zone from the 1930s should not only apply in many municipalities to be selected in terms of selection, but also across the board in residential areas and for schools. Now Pinkafeld also mixes with it. At the beginning of 2026, the city wants to lower the speed limit on municipal roads and has all the green light of the city council.

“We have taken the fundamental decision that – excluding state roads – speed 30 must be introduced everywhere,” explains Pinkafeld’s Vice mayor Adrian Kuba. A unanimous decision that shows how seriously you take the subject: “We just notice that it is important to intervene around schools and residential areas. State roads such as the heavily visited Bruckgasse and Wiener Straße stay outside,” there is no sense of speed 30, “says Kubat.

Pinkafeld wants to introduce the speed limit from 2026
However, the new speed limit must apply to all other municipal roads in the first quarter of 2026. A traffic report must still be made to prove the need. There is a ridge of the change in traffic regulations, making it much easier for municipalities for a year to reduce the speed limit in sensitive areas.

Directeedorf does it – Oberwart discussed
Nails have recently been done in Dirdorf. It is different in Oberwart, where, given the expansion of the 30 limitation to the entire urban area, you are still on the brakes. Although there are already 30 zones in two -thirds of the streets in the urban area, an extension to the entire city is not yet exactly. Mayor Georg Rosner (ÖVP) does not want to hurry: “We are currently leaving time behind. The process is running, considerations mature. It must be a free decision, in general discussed in the population.” The question of whether Oberwart will jump on the train from the 1930s will remain open for the time being.

Support from the state of Burgenland
Support also comes from the state of Burgenland. State councilor Heinrich Dorner welcomes every step in the direction of more safety: “Especially for the nursery schools, schools, houses or playgrounds of the old people, tailor-made solutions are needed. The pace 30 model has proven itself in individual cases.” In addition, the country offers the municipalities of mobile radar monitoring-it was used 65 times in the previous year alone.

VCö Initiative “Congregations and cities for Tempo 30”
In 2023, the VCö launched an initiative for an easier implementation of Tempo 30 in the area, which was supported throughout the parties by more than 280 municipalities and cities, the Austrian city association, the Climate Alliance, the Bike lobby and much more. Van Burgenland, including Drassburg, Großhöflein, Hornstein, Jennernorf, Königsdorf, Neufeld, Oberpullendorf, Oberwart, Zillingtal and Rudersdorf are among the supporters.

But not everyone is enthusiastic: according to an ÖAMTC survey from 2023, 65 percent of the Austrians feel a general reduction to 30 km / h as a bad or very bad idea. The criticism: too bureaucratic, to be realistic, too restrictive.
