It has an output of six Donube energy plants and secures the Power Grid of Austria: the Malta-Reißeck Power Plant Group was officially put into use after a modernization program. The “crown” was on site.
Kraftwerk operator has invested more than 200 million euros in the modernization and expansion of the Malta-Reißeck-Energiecentrale Group in the Oberkärntner Mölltal. The result is the largest “green battery” in Austria, which can save electricity surpluses of hundreds of wind turbines and to return to the power grid if necessary.
During the five -year construction period, various projects were implemented in parallel: extensive modernization were carried out at the existing Malta head and upper power plants and the turbine performance, the pump performance and generation increased. In addition, two flexibility booster were rebuilt with the Reisseck II Plus pump memory and the Kolbnitz pumping station.
“In all our measures we have succeeded in putting our systems on the best possible road through the use of innovative techniques on future flexibility needs,” emphasizes Karl Heinz Gruber, director of the Hydropower Association.
With the new, more powerful pumps in the Power Plant House in the Rottau, a considerable noise light can also be achieved for the population. About ten years ago, the initiative of a citizens had drawn attention to the increasing noise pollution due to the pumping processes.
“The Pumplärm is well resolved. Now the valley is facing the next major challenge,” said Alexandra Königsreiner from the initiative of the burgers “Save the Möll”. She speaks until the Gush Compensation Power Plant planned by Kelag.
The completed central group Malta-Reißeck is an important part of the Energy Fair of Austria. “These power plants can compensate for the weather -dependent power generation of wind and sun. The pumped stores are therefore green batteries,” said Michael Strugl, CEO of Verbund.
For state leader Peter Kaiser, the completion is ‘a milestone on the way to the future of sustainable energy’. For such projects it is essential that innovation, ecological responsibility and regional added value go hand in hand.
