The Dutch National Museum has a new exhibition that connects art with Amsterdam’s notorious Red Light District: an almost 200 -year -old condom. The contraceptive is provided with a drawing that brings representatives of the church to the grain.
According to the Rijksmuseum, the condom, which is probably made of the attachment of a sheep, is probably a souvenir from a brothel. As far as we know, only two copies have been preserved.
Nun with spread legs
The drawing on the 1830 condom shows a nun who is sitting for three clergy with spread legs and points to one of them with their fingers.
This was probably a parody of celibacy in the Catholic Church, the museum said too.
Condom can be seen until the end of November
The condom is shown as part of an exhibition about sexuality and prostitution in the 19th century, which can be seen until the end of November. “It shows both the playful and the serious side of sexual health,” the museum said about the condom. At that time, the pursuit of pleasure was in addition to the fear of venereal diseases, especially syphilis and unwanted pregnancy.
