Promotion for Father’s Day – Activists hang baby tops on images

Date:

Colorful towels and a baby in it: with the “caring men” art campaign, activists draw attention to themselves for Father’s Day. They want to convey a caring image of masculinity – away from power and inaccessibility. A survey from the University of Graz, in turn, shows that acceptance for 50:50 motherhood is being increased.

Marble heroes on meter -high skirting boards: the styrician writers Robert Hamerling and Peter Rosegger are only two of the many men immortalized in the Graz City Park. They radiate caution, strength and distance. On the occasion of Father’s Day, feminist activists now have a “disruptive factor” to the statues -and images in Austria -: Life -Size Baby tops in colorful windscreen wipers.

The art campaign is intended to come from the caring side of masculinity and to make it visible. The idea comes from Great Britain. “There is another way,” says Anna Majcan, spokeswoman for the Grau Frauenrat, who supports the campaign. “It’s high time for fathers, because it also ensures that men then take more care work.” This is an essential factor in the fight against poverty in old age and violence on women.

“Healthcare is the basis of our company and our lives: if nobody cares for us, we will look,” says Johanna Marcher of the initiative “Fair Berazing!” Styria. There is only equality when working with household and children are fairly distributed. “That would also be good for men. In the end they often regret that they have not had enough time for children and family.”

What do the men say? Philipp Stramec of the men’s advice was also on site during the campaign. “Men can take care of both children and women.” The key: talk well with each other as parents.

Trained city dwellers more for fathers
However, a new study by the University of Graz shows that it is still very far away until the 50:50 parental leave in Austria. “Acceptance is increasing – especially younger and higher -presented, city, green voters and less religious people prefer this model,” says Anja Eder of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Graz. “The personal attitude towards the employment of women and the traditional breadwinner model is also crucial.” 1,100 people participated in the representative survey in Austria.

Although in countries such as France or the Netherlands more than 60 percent support the equal distribution of pregnancy leave with a similar professional situation of the parents, it is currently only 41 percent in Austria. However, there is a big gap between wishes and reality: 97 percent of the reception of childcare is women, or not at all, men only go on maternity leave.

Half see men as a “nutrient”
The responsibility to deliver the family financially sees more than half of the Austrians in the man. “The idea of the male main earner and the female, reliconist” is still deeply rooted in Austria, “says sociologist Eder. At least symbolic the babies in the images are a step against it.
