Date:

Russian authorities reported a first case of monkey pox on Tuesday. The young man developed a typical rash after traveling through Europe, health authority Rospotrebnadzor said.

So he turned to a medical institution. The man is said to have only had a mild course of monkey pox and is being treated in hospital in isolation. According to authorities, his contacts have already been identified and are under the supervision of doctors.

Europe is hardest hit
The young man had previously traveled through Europe – the continent most affected by the current wave in the world. In particular, these are Germany, Great Britain and Spain, each with more than 1000 cases. In Austria, 62 cases have been reported since the beginning. Monkeypox has been around for a long time in some Western and African countries.

In addition to the skin rash, which is reminiscent of chickenpox or wet leaves, typical symptoms are a high fever and swollen lymph nodes. The disease is transmitted through close body and skin contact. Men are especially affected, especially those who have sex with men.
