In the night of Sunday, 54 people were saved by an abandoned oil platform in the Mediterranean Sea by the crew of the “astral” sailing ship. The refugees were stuck there for three days after their boat fracture.

On the platform a woman is even a child’s birth, another had just given birth a few days earlier. In addition to the two babies, there were also two toddlers among 54 people, the “astral” crew, which belongs to the Spanish NGO open arms.

The sailing ship is now on its way to Lampedusa, where it is expected to arrive on Sunday evening.

Further refugee tragedy prevented short
“It was a complicated rescue. If we had not intervened, it would have been a different tragedy. We need an immediate change of natural migration policy, which really respects and guarantees the right to life. We will not be tired of repeating this,” Open Arms said in a press release.

278 migrants drove on two fishing boats
In the meantime, the Italian Coast Guard brought 278 migrants for safety off the Calabria coast. People from Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Syria and Sudan, including different children, were saved. The migrants are on board two fishing boats for three days, which were located by the coast guard in front of the city of Roccella Jonica in Calabria. They had left the Libyan port city of Tobruk.

Almost 24,000 migrants arrived from January to the beginning of June 2025 after seafaring via the Mediterranean Sea in South -Italy. In the comparison period 2024 there were 21,784, said the Ministry of the Interior in Rome.
