Two men from Greece were attacked by a bear on a walk on the Greek-Bulgarian border. The animal hurled one of the two men a steep slope. The walker died.
Despite an extensive nocturnal search, rescue workers could only find the man’s body, as the Greek Rundfunk Ertnews reported. The second walker managed to hide in the bushes of the forest until the bear finally retired.
While he described the Greek news channel Skai, the use of pepper spray was not effective. While the man was passed on close trees, his companion was already on the edge of a steep slope. “In the front of the abyss, behind him the bear. One blow and he fell in the depth.”
The mayor of the nearest village of Paranesti said on the Greek radio that countless bears and other wild animals live in the dense forest near the Greek-Bulgarian border.
“Bears rarely attack people – but they can become aggressive in times of fear,” he said. The rescue service said that the dead man was saved from the rough terrain in the coming hours with the help of a helicopter.
