The main harvest season for sweet fruits has now started again. What conclusions the fruit growers have drawn so far and what the “apricot tourists” should definitely pay attention to.
Smaller yield, but the usual great taste – this is the first conclusion of the most important apricot harvest in the Wachau. The varieties of the estimated 100,000 trees in the World Heritage region bear slightly less fruit this year than in previous years. But fruit growers know, “It could have been a lot worse.” As reported, there was a frost in the spring, which killed many flowers.
However, the sunny weather and the fairly high precipitation percentages of the past few weeks have done the “orange gold” good. Moreover, despite the lower harvest volumes, demand remains high. However, the daily harvest quantities that make it to the sales stands can vary widely. “Whoever wants to buy a larger quantity of Wachau apricots should therefore place an order by telephone in advance with the apricot farmer”, is recommended.
Lower Austria as apricot hotspot
Some of the apricots in the so-called front gardens of the Wachau and also in the Weinviertel have been harvested since June. “The quality is there again this year”, according to the fruit growers. With a cultivation area of about 650 hectares, Lower Austria is again Austria’s apricot hotspot this year. Almost two-thirds of all apricots in Austria come from the vast country.
