People are getting mad because 3G proof and a face mask are mandatory at the entrance: “Because there are no rules outside anymore, many do not want to understand that and become really aggressive,” says Angelina-Shakira Hager (20), she works at the entrance gate and has a lot to go through right now.
Angelina-Shakira Hager is 20 years old and has been working at the entrance lock at the hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Linz since October 2020. In recent weeks, in particular, the young woman has faced repeated verbal and physical attacks: “If you want to go to our hospital, you have to register in advance, wear a mask and present 3G proof.”
“For example, a man who wanted to visit his wife went crazy after I asked for his 3G card. He fell to the floor and said I gave him a heart attack. Or on night shift a man told me he would kill me. These are just two of many examples.”
Man riots with disinfectant dispenser
Almost two weeks ago, the police also had to come to the rescue: a man who did not want to accept the Corona rules is said to have grabbed a disinfectant dispenser, threw it around, smashed objects and sprayed employees with the disinfectant. According to nurse director Georgine Gattermayr this is not an isolated case, last week a visitor with a folder hit an employee – only the police could help here.
Also riots in the emergency room
“The mood was different in the first two corona waves. The currently sometimes aggressive behavior of the people is becoming an increasing problem throughout the hospital,” Gattermayr said tensely. “The police have assured us that they will always be there immediately if something happens. All these incidents affect our employees mentally. Not only at the entrance, there is also regular police in the emergency room.
It’s all very unfortunate, we didn’t make the Corona rules. We’re just here to help people and we still get so much hate.”
