According to the government, despite the Russian blockade of the Black Sea ports, Ukraine can export grain by ship via the Danube. “In the past four days, 16 ships have passed through the Bistrau estuary,” said Deputy Infrastructure Minister Yuri Vaskov. “We intend to maintain this pace.”
The 16 ships would now wait to be loaded with Ukrainian grain for export abroad. Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of wheat and other grains.
Ukraine demands increase in grain transit capacity
More than 90 other ships are waiting in Romania’s Sulina Canal. Until now, the Sulina route could handle four ships a day, but grain exports require eight ships a day. Ukraine is negotiating with Romanian colleagues and representatives of the European Commission to increase throughput capacity.
Negotiations in Istanbul on grain shipments across the Black Sea
On Wednesday, delegations from Russia and Ukraine will discuss the resumption of grain deliveries across the Black Sea in Turkey. According to Turkish information, representatives of the UN and Turkey will also participate in the meeting in Istanbul. Millions of tons of wheat are stuck in Ukrainian ports under Russian control or blocked by Russian forces.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24, grain supplies have deteriorated in many countries. Turkey has traditionally maintained good relations with both Ukraine and Russia and seeks to mediate between the conflicting parties.
