Director of education investigates allegations after death of MBO students while traveling

Date:

After an MBO student was killed during a field trip at the end of June, his classmates are now making accusations against the teachers. At 35 degrees Celsius, they should not have taken a sports break or visited shady places. The education department is investigating the case, but the public prosecutor’s office is not investigating.

The 22-year-old collapsed in the afternoon heat on June 30, according to the Vienna professional rescue service, he had a cardiac arrest and died on the spot. The vocational school group attended a tasting session with the Viennese Vikings. On this day it should be 35 degrees Celsius and hardly any shaded areas for breaks.

“The police have conducted an investigation on the spot. A police report was also filed. The public prosecutor’s office was also informed by means of a final report. But an autopsy was not ordered,” said police spokesman Markus Dittrich in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal”.

Teachers shouldn’t have allowed breaks
So far, no witnesses to the incident have come forward. Now, however, the classmates made accusations against the teachers present. A student who had become dizzy explained to a teacher that she should not sit down, but join in, according to the “Kurier”. In addition, none of the students should have taken a break in the shade during training.

The deceased man should not have been urged to continue, education director Heinrich Himmer said in the Ö1 “Tomorrow Journal”. “I can’t confirm that now. That’s not the feedback I get from school.” On June 30, a first aid team is said to have been on site and the teachers had asked the students to drink water.

Himmer now wants to have the case investigated for service law violations because there are different opinions. The teaching staff is already being questioned about the incident. Classmates are also welcome to give their opinion. However, it will probably be September when the surveys are completed, as no one should be excluded due to the summer holidays.

Prosecutor: No first suspicion
In the future, the school must look at what can be done differently and better at similar events. The prosecutor’s office is not currently investigating this case. She sees no initial suspicion of culpable homicide or any other criminal behavior.
