Every 3rd is younger than 20 – Europol warns: terrorists become younger and younger

Date:

According to a report from Europol, terrorists are becoming younger. Last year almost one in three suspects younger than 20 years old – the youngest was even twelve. The European police organization presented a new report on trends in Terrorism in The Hague on Tuesday.

According to Europol, “online cultural communities” use digital platforms to spread and normalize images of extreme cruelty, victims of blackmail and young people to violence. According to Europol, many of these violent groups of connections with jihadist terrorism and extremist groups have law.

These groups were aimed at particularly endangered young people, on average between eight and 17 years old. “Terrorist groups focus on endangered people,” said European boss Catherine de Bolle. “Especially those who have to struggle with psychological problems, social isolation or digital dependence.”

The EU Commissioner for the Interior, Magnus Brunner, also called for vigilance: “We must be particularly vigilant for the radicalization of young people and the use of online platforms by terrorists and extremists.”

According to Europe, geopolitical tensions would also contribute to radicalization. In this context, Europol mentions the Gaza war and the Russian attack war in Ukraine, but also the uncertain situation in Syria.

According to Europol, another worrying development is the use of new technologies in radicalization and recruitment of possible perpetrators. Artificial intelligence is used to an unprecedented extent to produce and spread propaganda and hatred.

According to Europol, a total of 58 terrorist attacks of 14 EU member states were therefore completed in 2024-34 of them, and the rest failed or could be thwarted. According to the information, 449 suspects were arrested.
