Why it was wise to bring down China’s balloon late

Date:

Spy or investigative tool? This is still a matter of debate, but the shooting down of a Chinese balloon and three other light missiles – now classified as civilian – in the skies over North America sparked a diplomatic crisis between Beijing and Washington and raised many questions. We asked a Secret Service expert what the mysterious balloons are all about.

Dieter Bacher researches the work of international intelligence services as a historian at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Research on the Consequences of War in Graz at the Center for Intelligence, Propaganda and Security Studies (ACIPSS). In the lengthy interview, we travel with him to the origins of balloon espionage during the Cold War, exploring the significance and purpose of these hovering surveillance systems – and discovering why it took the US so long to shoot them down.
