Ajax fell and finished second behind Feyenoord

Date:

Ajax, led by Serbian Dusan Tadic, took advantage of AZ Alkmaar’s defeat and PSV Eindhoven’s draw to attack second place in the Eredivisie after beating Sparta Rotterdam (4-0) and establish themselves as the main threat to the leadership of Feyenoord.

The improvement of the champion after the arrival on his bench of John Heitinga is emphasized every day. Ajax have won four in a row in the Dutch championship and are putting pressure on Feyenoord every weekend, where they have just three points.

Ajax won the first half, led by Serbian Dusan Tadic. The Serb opened the scoring six minutes later by capitalizing on a Davy Klaassen through ball and helped extend his side’s lead after half-time by setting up Kenneth Taylor for the second. Tadic then rounded off the scoring by signing the third, on 64′, converting the penalty.

In the final period, Ajax sealed the win with a goal from Mohammed Kudus, who beat goalkeeper Nick Olij for the fourth time with a free-kick. The Ghanaian striker lifted one shirt to reveal another in which he dedicated the goal to his compatriot Christian Atsu, whose body was found on Saturday under the rubble of a building in Hatay, a Turkish earthquake-ravaged city on February 6.

Ajax overcame AZ Alkmaar, who lost 2-1 at leaders Feyenoord on Saturday, to move into second, just three points off first place. PSV, who drew today against Utrecht (2-2), is fourth.
