When the thermometer shows around 36 degrees, the animals in Rome -Dierentuin are also happy with a frissing of ice -cold. Some animal species such as tigers, monkeys and nose bears are spoiled by their carers with a special ice cream. The varieties are based on the flavors and needs of the residues of the zoo.
To facilitate the fight against the heat, the staff changed the menu, as the Roman daily “Il Messaggero” reported on Wednesday: ice cubes with fruit, fish or meat, depending on the needs of the different types. The tiger gets ice cubes with meat. The zoo in the Villa Borghese City Park houses 1200 animals, including reptiles, mammals and birds.
For Carnivore diet with smaller portions than in winter
Before the summer, the nutritionists of the Biopark prescribe a diet with smaller portions to all carnivors than in winter. For the ice cream cups of the monkeys, grapes, mangos and bananas are frozen in orange juice. Monkeys are administered with fresh yogurtbamboo. During the summer, the animals of the zoo consume hundreds of kilos every day, especially melons.
“Our goal is to guarantee the best conditions for the animals to make ends meet in this heat wave. The animals mainly need shadows and fresh water. Swimming pools are essential, especially for elephants, because the baths press their temperature,” says Yitzhak Yadid, head of the Biopark.
The three brown bear Mary, Gianni and Sam are also looking for refreshment. All three were housed in the zoo after poor treatment. You now enjoy the freshness of a large swimming pool that is furnished for you.
