This auction at Sotheby’s in New York could set a new record. A piece of the planet Mars will soon come under the hammer.
It was the largest well -known piece of rock of the red planet on earth, the auction house announced on Wednesday. The meteorite called “NWA 16788” according to the information weighs almost 25 kilograms. The piece of rock was discovered with the typical red color and the glassy surface in 2023 in the Niger.
This is how Mars Play came to earth
The meteorite was probably cut off during a violent asteroid impact on Mars and came to earth in this way. Pieces of Mars are very rare on earth. According to Sotheby’s, only about 400 Mars-Meteorites (among around 77,000 officially recognized meteorites on earth) are most of them very small. “NWA 16788” will be auctioned in New York on July 16.
