Problems with ocean giants – Nice: mayor protests on rubber boat

Date:

It is really a fight like David against Goliath. The mayor of Nice wants to ban cruise ships from his port with more than 2500 people on board. But the captains and shipping company whistle the instructions of the local chef, as can be seen on videos currently spreading on social media. To this, scales can be seen on how he protests against an ocean giant with a megafon in his hand on a rubber boat.

“You have no permission to throw the anchor here! You will be punished hard for it,” the 70-year-old politician from the crew of the cruise ship Voyager of the seas, while these passengers accompany them in the landing ships with which they have to be brought to the coast.

The day before, the captain of the ship had received a letter from the mayor, who stood to read those cruise ships with more than 2500 people on board, should no longer create in the bay before July 1. But the recipient of the letter did not respond and his ship did not move an inch.

As much pollution a day as 30,000 cars
Even the publicly effective protest was no fruits in it, so Estrosi had to return to his office. But he does not leave it up and wants to prevent the high emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and fine dust from being polluted in Nice. A day in the bay causes as much air pollution as 30,000 cars, Estrosi calculates. And when the cruise ships sail again, they left their waste water in the sea, the mayor continued.

Estrosi is not only fighting the ocean giants on the French Mediterranean coast. He has a colleague in Marseille, Cannes and Toulon – but also powerful opponents in the tourism sector or gastronomy. Here is eager lobby for the ocean giants and their passengers. It is also unclear whether mayor can pronounce the landing bans. After his protest, Estrosi told the French media that he would contact the responsible prefecture and also to the Minister of Climate Protection.
