In the first half of 2025, 14 poisoned birds of prey have already been proven in Bavaria – the number of it exceeds the previous year. The search for the perpetrators is difficult – these are suspected in the circle of hunters or pigeon breeders.
In 2024 there were 13 cases and a poisoned pigeon was also found. The toxicological finding is currently still being treated in four cases this year, says Nicole Meier, biologist and at the LBV who is responsible for nature conservation crime. “We also have two cases of GIFAAS,” reports biologist Nicole Meier of the Landebund for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV).
Often forbidden nerve poison as a weapon
The AAS explained unknown people. The Carbofuran, who has been banned over the EU, is the most proven poison, says Meier. It used to be used as an insecticide. Muisbeuzards are especially often influenced as the most common domestic birds of prey. With the red kite – also AA -Aater and therefore susceptible to GIFAs – Germany is particularly responsible, because more than half of the world’s world’s population is in particular.
Perpetrators are hard to find. “In Bavaria we are not aware of a conviction of a perpetrator in a poisoning case,” says Meier. In some cases, suspects were determined, but the procedure was stopped due to a lack of evidence. The conservationists suspect two perpetrators- also of knowledge in other federal and EU countries. “On the one hand it can be assumed that there are unfortunately a few black sheep in the hunters, who feel that they are competing with the birds of prey,” says Meier. Because the birds hunt for smaller game such as pheasants or rabbits.
Kamikotauben as a lively poison
Individual perpetrators also suspect the conservationists of poultry or pigeon breeders. “People are understandably very dependent on their animals and are proud of them. If they are beaten by a bird of prey, this leads to frustration,” says Meier. In some cases, driven kamikotaupen are used as a lively poison. The pigeon is covered with poison and flies. Victims are birds of prey such as Hawk and Wandering Falcon, who hunt for other birds during the flight. The vast majority of hunters as the breeder condemns the alleged approach of colleagues.
