More than a year after the shooting attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the trial against the alleged attacker Juraj Cintula started Tuesday.
The then 71-year-old man was arrested on May 15, 2024 immediately after the crime. The public prosecutor accuses him of political motives.
Different shots
In TV and video recordings that were later released, the perpetrator greeted different shots on the prime minister after a meeting of the governmental cabinet in the small town of Handlova when Fico Supporters welcomed.
“Long live democracy!”
When the suspect was led by a police scale to the courthouse in Banska Bystrica, he called loudly: “Long live democracy!” His lawyer read a statement in which he rejected the accusation of terrorism by the indictment.
His client is dedicated to shoot Fico, but this was not a terrorist act.
The accused threatens a life sentence
The indictment was originally tried to kill. In July 2024, however, the public prosecutor, however, classified the claim for the alleged political motive for terrorism. In this way the now 72-year-old life sentence threatens in the case of a conviction.
