Russia regroups its troops and increases its attacks in southern and eastern Ukraine

Authorities activate the air raid siren in light of the danger of missile launches, such as the one that left three dead and 15 injured in Dnipro

A week after five months since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began, fighting continues in a country devastated by ongoing fighting. Moscow has regrouped its forces and launched new attacks to the south and east of the invaded area. The target? According to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, the aim is to “strengthen the activities of the military groups in the south and the center to rule out the possibility of the Ukrainian armed forces carrying out massive rocket attacks on cities under Moscow’s control”.

The increase in the offensive in the south of the country can be seen in Dnipro, where at least three people have been killed and another 15 injured after an air raid on a factory. “The missiles hit an industrial company and the busy street next to it,” said Dnipropetrovsk province governor Valentin Reznichenko. Of the non-fatal victims, thirteen had “severe draft” injuries, while the remaining two were of “moderate severity”.

In the same region, two other people have died in the city of Nikopol after 53 Grad missiles were launched on the city. Ukrainian authorities, which have brought the death toll in the Russian attack on Vinitsia to 24 this week, are not hopeful that the fighting will end any time soon. And the regrouping of the Moscow army has hit them like a bucket of cold water.

In this new offensive phase of the Kremlin, with reinforcement of troops, attacks can take place anytime and anywhere. For this reason, due to a greater danger of missile launches, the air raid siren has been activated in almost the entire country, except in Crimea and the Kherson region, both Russian-occupied territories. Given the situation, authorities are recommending residents to seek refuge. Indeed, Sumy mayor Oleksandr Lisenko has advised residents to leave the city this weekend after recent clashes in the region, in which invaders fired mortars at Ukrainian positions near Zarutske, Starikove and Budivelne.

In the east of the country, in the Donbas region, Vladimir Putin’s forces have concentrated their main efforts on preventing the advance of the Kiev troops. They also carried out air and artillery strikes on Donetsk, Kharkov, Bakhmut and Sloviansk, among other smaller towns.

The destruction will not continue. President Volodímir Zelenski has assured that “we will certainly restore everything they destroy. Any of the more than two thousand educational institutions: all kindergartens, all schools, institutes, universities. And the most important thing is that we will keep our humanity and our civility.” He also predicted that Russian society “will remain paralyzed for generations”, referring to the attacks of “so many murderers and executioners”.

Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russia of firing rockets from the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, which has been occupied since March and is home to at least 500 Russian soldiers. Nuclear power operator Energoatom has denounced the movement of projectile launchers into its facilities to attack other areas. “The situation is extremely tense and the tension is mounting by the day. The occupants are bringing their machines, including the missile systems with which they attacked the other side of the Dnipro River and the Nikopol area,” said Petro Kotin, chairman of Energoatom.

Amid tensions, the United States denounced two Russian visits to an Iranian airport to study drones in the past month after Tehran denied sending military aid to Moscow for use in the war. “We have information that the Iranian government is preparing to provide Russia with several hundred unmanned aerial vehicles, including suitable weapons,” they said from the White House. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdolahian, for his part, has assured that such US claims have no basis whatsoever.
