Big reunion! They became known as the “Vienna Quadruplets”, and now return to their hometown with 18 (!) children of their own.
July 2, 1982 has entered the medical history books of Austria’s largest hospital: Perfectly healthy quadruplets were born for the first time in the Vienna General Hospital. 40 years later, Markus Müller, Rector of the Medical University of Vienna, and his deputy, Vice Rector Oswald Wagner, invited Valerie, Natalie, Isabella and Pia to a grand reunion.
The “Krone” attended the happy birthday celebration in the rectorate building in Vienna – as well as the incredible 18 children of the now grown women and their husbands, parents, uncles, midwives and much more. We were also there as life partners in 2001, helping with clothes when the four beautiful young ladies opened the ball of balls in the Hofburg.
“I love how big your family has grown,” Rector Müller smiled, recalling the medical miracle of yesteryear in the Art Nouveau building, which served as a women’s clinic from 1904 to 1992.
Valeria was the first to see the light of day – 1510 grams of light and 40 centimeters long. Then followed Natalie (1350, 40), Isabella (1320, 41) and Pia (1020, 36). “When I found out we were having quadruplets I was nervous, but now I’m so thankful that everything went well,” mother Ursula Bonelli said in an interview. After the bad news, in this case good news, father Lukas immediately started looking for a bigger apartment and luckily found what he was looking for in Vienna-Liesing.
“We have a unique common bond”
“Of course, as is common with many siblings, we fought, but we all have a unique bond,” said Vierling Isabella. And further: “After we all graduated from high school and went through puberty, we really only appreciated the benefits of our quadruple existence.”
There wasn’t much of a risk of confusion—as is often the case with identical twins—but primary and secondary school teachers often confused the names of the four girls.
A special life, and the “crown” was always there
White rompers and milk bottles at hand – the first photo of the four girls from the family album makes hearts beat faster. So is the black and white photo of Papa Lukas lovingly holding the hand of his brave Ursula in childbirth and caressing her. Then the baptism and the first “crown” visit to home. Particular attention was paid in 2001 when Pia, Valerie, Natalie and Isabella posed on the cover of “Krone bunt” in their beautiful ball gowns for the Vienna Opera Ball.
