Asylum numbers are increasing – migrants wanted to come to us with a whole arsenal of weapons

Date:

In the shadow of the war in Ukraine, a silent crisis is creeping in: the number of asylum seekers rises to the highest level since 2015 – meanwhile, migrants with guns and 182 cartridges were on their way to Austria.

In the year of the large influx of refugees, there were almost 90,000 asylum applications in Austria. This year, internal security authorities expect about 70,000 applications before the end of the year – the second highest value since 2015. Of course, protection of Ukrainian war refugees is not included in these figures.

The latest developments on the infamous Balkan route also show that in the shadow of the Russian war of aggression, the ruthless international human smuggling gangs are feeling ‘big business’. As reported, 45,000 migrants are ready to march and want to head to the golden west before winter.

Twelve million refugees are waiting in Iran, Turkey and Egypt to make their way to Europe. The focus is on the Serbian-Hungarian border, where pressure is increasing and violence among migrants is also on the rise. This culminated a few days ago in the murder of a young Afghan by a compatriot during a dispute between two groups in a forest area.

40 heavily armed migrants arrested
A recent operation involving Serbian counter-terrorist units, just ten kilometers from the Hungarian border, is particularly alarming for the Interior Ministry. During the major action, about 40 heavily armed migrants were arrested near Subotica on their way to Austria.

Assault rifles, ammunition and fake passports
The group had a veritable arsenal of automatic rifles, four pistols, twelve knives, machetes, sabers and 182 rounds of various calibres. Drugs and six forged identity cards and passports were also seized.

Due to the recent threatening events, the director-general for public security, Franz Ruf, and Gerald Tatzgern, the head of anti-smuggling at the federal police, will travel to the Serbian border from Monday for an exchange with the Hungarian police. By the end of the year, the local red-white-red border guard contingent will grow to 50 officers. Drones and thermal imagers are also used.
