The deployment of a German rescue helicopter in the border triangle between Bavaria, Vorarlberg and Tyrol almost ended in disaster on Saturday. The plane was just flying over the Allgäu municipality of Rettenberg when it came on a collision course with a model airplane.
The rescue helicopter was on its way to surgery on Saturday afternoon when a model plane suddenly came dangerously close over Rettenberg.
According to the Bavarian police, a collision could only be prevented by an evasive maneuver initiated by the pilot just in time.
Fortunately, there was no patient on board at the time of the incident. The helicopter crew members were not injured. The police have now launched an investigation into the criminal offense of dangerous intervention in air traffic. In Germany, this can lead to prison terms ranging from six months to ten years.
