That was last minute rescue! A pensioner (72) went down while swimming in the Waldkirchen swimming lake in Upper Austria. 15-year-old Simon, who happened to be passing by, immediately jumped into the water and pulled the 72-year-old to shore.
It was the experience of swimming lessons he had taken years ago in the NMS Waldhausen that prompted 15-year-old Simon Lehner-Ölwener from the village of Gloxwald to jump into action on Saturday evening. “At the time, we were learning how to get drowning people out of the water – I just tried that now,” the teen emphasizes, adding, “It was even easier than I thought it would be.”
The 15-year-old is currently doing a holiday internship in the kitchen of the inn “Keys host” in Waldhausen. Early Saturday evening he met friends at the Waldkirchen swimming lake. There they wanted to ask if you could try wakeboards. “But we had to get across — and I instinctively decided to take the left path,” said the 15-year-old.
woman screaming for help
A choice that may have saved the life of a 72-year-old resident. Suddenly, Simon heard a woman screaming for help that her husband was about to drown in the lake. A passer-by immediately ran to a swimming ring that hung on the shore and threw it into the lake, but the pensioner couldn’t reach it. “I saw the man floating face down in the water, motionless,” says Lehner-Oilweiner.
He then immediately ripped off his T-shirt, threw off his shoes and entered the swimming lake. “He was about ten meters from shore. I reached him quickly and then used the rescue grip we learned.” The 15-year-old then pulled the lifeless man ashore.
“Suddenly I felt a heartbeat”
Other people were aware of the incident and tried to help. The 72-year-old was turned on his side and then began chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. “Suddenly you felt his pulse and he was breathing again. That was a huge relief for all of us,” says Simon, who had also warned the rescue service. The 72-year-old was eventually flown by helicopter to the Amstetten clinic.
The student was rightly praised after his crime: “His wife thanked me and a passerby even invited me for a drink.”
