In the US state of West Virginia, a woman who was brutally attacked and seriously injured two years ago woke up from a coma – and the police gave the name of the perpetrator. Wanda Palma, 51, was in a nursing home with brain injuries after the near-fatal attack.
Palma was found critically injured by police officers at her home near Cottageville, West Virginia, in June 2020. Officials initially assumed the woman was dead, but then noticed she was still breathing shallow. “She was slumped on the couch with massive facial and head injuries,” Jackson County Sheriff Ross Mellinger told CNN.
Murder weapon was never found
According to Mellinger, the serious injuries to Palma were apparently caused by an ax or ax, but police have never found the murder weapon. There were also no eyewitnesses, phone records or surveillance footage outside of Palma’s home, the sheriff said. The police investigated several suspects, but could not identify the perpetrators.
A few weeks ago, Mellinger told CNN that his office received a call from Palma’s health care facility saying the 51-year-old had come out of her coma and was able to speak to authorities. On July 12, the woman received a visit, where she gave the name of the attacker: that of her brother, Daniel Palma.
The 55-year-old was finally arrested last Friday (see photo and video above). He will be charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.
