You would almost think you are in the Caribbean – blue sky, unbelievably blue water. If you just look at the photo, you believe in an idyll. But if you zoom out a bit, you can see what’s really happening.
In reality, an animal drama takes place here: the fish die in the Zicksee in St. Andrä in Burgenland because they no longer have water. Due to the heat, the lake has dried up so much that there is only a small amount of water left in the lake.
The “fishermen” on display are trying to save something and get as many animals as possible in ponds to safety. However, this possibility is limited.
Until about a month and a half ago, water was pumped into the Zicksee. But because the groundwater is also at a critical level, this permit was withdrawn on 1 June.
Mayor Andreas Sattler: “We have predicted what will happen if we are no longer allowed to pump”, he also looks stunned at the drama. “We are now trying to collect as many fish as possible before it is completely dry.”
Because: If it stays that hot and you can’t pump or if it doesn’t rain hard and continuously, it will probably be by the weekend at the latest: Bye-bye, Zicksee!
