The father of Leon (6), who was found dead on Sunday morning in the Kitzbüheler Ache in St. Johann in Tirol, was interrogated by the police on Wednesday. An unknown robber attacked the 37-year-old from behind during a walk, after which he collapsed unconscious. Then his son died in the floods.
However, the interrogation of the 37-year-old, who was hit with a bottle by an unknown person, did not lead to new evidence of the perpetrator, LKA director Katja Tersch told APA. The detectives therefore continue to rely on the crime scene trace evaluations, which would continue.
The lead investigator declined to provide details about the questioning, as it could jeopardize the investigation, she said. The police had recently requested information from the population.
Autopsy: death by drowning
An autopsy at Innsbruck forensics on Monday confirmed that the boy had drowned. Apparently Leon – when his father was unconscious – crawled out of the pram and fell into the Kitzbüheler Ache. In addition, the investigation found no evidence of any violence that could have been done to the child before the accident.
The 37-year-old was walking with his infant son in a pram on a promenade next to the Ache at 4 a.m. on Sunday when the crime apparently took place. In this case, this was “pretty normal behavior” and nothing out of the ordinary, Tersch described. The father stated that he often did this to calm his mentally retarded child.
Robber approached from behind
The assailant had previously approached the boy’s father from behind in the area of the main school jetty and then punched him in the head with a bottle in a targeted and forceful manner. The 37-year-old fell to the ground and remained unconscious. The perpetrator allegedly took the man’s wallet and mobile phone. He fled in an unknown direction. The cell phone and wallet were eventually found in the immediate vicinity of the crime scene.
At about 5:20 a.m., the father was found unconscious by a passerby. This informed the rescue. While providing help, the father then asked about his child. A search was then launched and the six-year-old was eventually found an hour later.
