Hikers who regularly walk along the Danube here reported that first the cygnets and then the adult swans had disappeared. “Wednesday evening I heard a shot and the next day the last swan was gone,” says an Eferding resident, who travels here regularly and has been observing the waterfowl for years.

She is afraid that the animals have been poached. Theoretically, mute swans are a huntable game in Upper Austria, but they are protected all year round. There is no evidence of the incident. Another passerby would have seen a dead swan, but left there – now it is no longer to be found.
The Eferdingerin is sure that the disappearance of the swan family is no accident. That is why she has already reported it to the police and is now offering a 500 euro bounty if a ‘swan killer’ can be caught.
