In southeastern France, a man killed five family members and was then shot and killed by police. The 22-year-old man had been locked up in the parental home in the village of Douvres east of Lyon since Tuesday evening. On Wednesday morning, security forces stormed the house and killed the man.
The five dead are members of the man’s patchwork family, Mayor Christian Limousin said. Three children were among the dead. Details of the family relationships were initially unknown. The family has been living in the city since 2020.
The man was armed with a pistol and a Japanese sword. Police had surrounded the house and cordoned off much of the center of the town of about 1,000. About a hundred police officers and forensic technicians were on the scene.
Attempts to contact the perpetrator failed
Security forces had tried unsuccessfully all night to contact the man. Initially, the Public Prosecution Service did not want to comment on the motive. An acquaintance of the family stated that the perpetrator was 22 years old and worked for a fast food chain in a nearby town. Tania, a 30-year-old woman who runs the village pub, told AFP: “At 8:30 this morning, the gendarmes asked me not to open my bar. The mother of one of the victims called me and said that she has not been able to reach her daughter since yesterday.”
