According to the Russian army, it fired on several targets in southern and eastern Ukraine. More than 600 Ukrainian soldiers and two civilians are said to have been killed. According to the British secret service, Russian troops are currently trying to capture power plants. They are approaching Ukraine’s second largest power plant in Wuhlehirsk (Donetsk).
“Russia is prioritizing capturing critical infrastructure such as power plants,” the British Ministry of Defense said. Wuhlehirsk is about 50 kilometers from Donetsk. The largest nuclear power plant in the country and in Europe is located in the Zaporizhzhya region, partially occupied by Russia. According to Kiev, the Russian army has already stationed troops and stored military equipment there.
Drone attack on nuclear power plants?
Moscow, in turn, accused the Ukrainian military of attacking the local nuclear power plant with two drones. The fact that there was no damage and a “man-made disaster” was pure luck, the Russian defense ministry said. The reports could not be independently verified.
In the Donetsk and Mykolaiv regions, a total of nine command posts were hit within 24 hours, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov reported on Thursday. In addition, six weapons depots were allegedly destroyed and a fighter plane and a combat helicopter were shot down.
The Ukrainian side also said heavy fighting in Donbass continued on Thursday. “In the Luhansk region, probably not a single square meter of land has been spared from Russian artillery,” Governor Serhiy Hajday wrote on the Telegram SMS service. The Russian forces would not stop attacking until their equipment was exhausted.
600 Ukrainian soldiers killed in Odessa
Fighting continued in Kharkov, where two civilians were killed and 19 wounded, according to the local governor, and in Odessa. An airstrike in this region of southern Ukraine is said to have killed more than 600 Ukrainian soldiers.
Among them are up to 120 foreign mercenaries, Konashenkov said. The Ukrainian side has not confirmed this information. Moscow, in turn, denies allegations of targeting civilians in Ukraine.
On Wednesday, the Kremlin threatened to take even more territories than originally announced. The reason given was the increasing range of weapons supplied by the West, which pose a threat to the eastern Ukrainian separatist regions of Donetsk and Luhansk and to Russia itself. US interests and military aid to Ukraine would stand in the way of a peaceful settlement in Donbass.
