The deputy director of the state police in Burgenland, Werner Fasching, calmed down on Thursday regarding the situation at the border with Hungary. The numerous arrests of refugees would pose a challenge to the police, but “2015 is still a long way off,” he stressed. He rejected the accusation that migrants were simply sent away after 48 hours with a cargo because there was not enough capacity: “Everyone is registered.”
The criticism that in some cases there was no registration – which the SPÖ Burgenland had recently voiced – came “completely out of the blue”, according to Fasching. In individual cases it happened that an intake interview could not be held within the legally prescribed 48 hours because no interpreter was available for the desired language.
“You Know Where They Are”
Those affected were then summoned, but were not left to their own devices. They were registered with name, date of birth, fingerprints and photo, were assigned 15 minutes and were taken there. “You know where they are, they also get their information and support there, that they are questioned first,” Fasching emphasized. Specifically, this was only the case for 35 people.
Close cooperation with Hungary
The situation at the border is currently manageable, according to the deputy director of the national police. The police work closely with Hungary, for example in priority actions and weekly meetings. Austrian officials are also involved in actions on Hungarian sovereign territory. In addition, Burgenland receives support from the other federal states.
500 withdrawals per day
Refugees would be taken to Vienna, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Carinthia or Styria. There have been short-lived problems with transportation in recent days, but things should be back to normal by Thursday evening, Fasching said. 500 people can be accommodated per day. 900 soldiers assist in the relief operation.
