More and more passengers are now “topless” on Vienna’s public transport system. The “Krone” was present at an inspection.
As before, an FFP2 mask must be worn on city public transport. Really. But fewer and fewer people are sticking to it. It could also be the high temperatures, but mask morale has plummeted in recent weeks. In any case, the Wiener Linien now wants to focus on “action sharp”.
Together with the police, more checks are now being carried out on public transport. There should also be more announcements from now on. Soon even multilingual. Additional information on the info screens. Anyone who does not comply with the regulation can expect a fine of 50 euros.
In any case, during the center of gravity check on Thursday afternoon at the Westbahnhof, there was not much evidence of an “active action”. Not a single mask muffle was punished by the control teams accompanied by the Vienna police! Instead, the passengers were politely advised to don a mask.
The mood is getting more aggressive
“Our security teams are not having an easy time right now. But the colleagues are doing their best. That is why we call on all travelers to help and wear the mask on public transport and at the stations,” says Wiener Linien.
But the mood towards the employees is becoming increasingly aggressive. There are now more physical attacks. In 2022 there were more than 20 incidents. A third of the attacks are due to the mask problem.
