Interim Balance Shows – OMV: Gazprom Delivers Half Ordered Quantity

Date:

Russia has kept its word – after a ten-day maintenance break, gas is now flowing again via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline towards Austria. However, it is still significantly less than ordered: according to OMV, Gazprom has actually met the delivery quantities announced yesterday, but this still only corresponds to half of the ordered gas.

In concrete terms, about the same amount of gas flowed on Thursday as for the ten-day maintenance of the gas pipeline to the partly state-owned company OMV. During the Nord Stream maintenance shutdown, OMV received only a third of the gas ordered from Russia.

Whether Gazprom will actually deliver the agreed amount for today cannot be said until tomorrow, according to an OMV spokesperson from the APA, when the daily 24-hour rhythm has expired.

Keep waiting for turbine
The Canadian-made turbine is still needed to restore full supply volume, the Russian gas company explains. However, only on Wednesday, Gazprom complained that they still have no information about if and when the turbine will arrive in Russia.

According to Russian information, it arrived in Germany on Sunday – a delivery time of five to seven days is assumed, which means it should arrive on Sunday at the latest.

Gas stop: Consumption must fall by a quarter
This means that the sword of Damocles still hangs over Europe, with Russia perhaps halting its deliveries altogether. In the current situation, that would also be the biggest economic risk of the war in Ukraine, economic researchers at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) explained on Thursday.

The IHS model calculations are based on the assumption that 27 percent of natural gas consumption should be saved between fall 2022 and summer next year, leading to a three percent reduction in GDP. These savings would inevitably also lead to production cuts, even if sufficient gas could be purchased, but at very high prices.
