Strong heat thunderstorms: – Civil protection alert in Spittal and Villach-Land!

Date:

Civil defense alarms have again gone off in two Carinthian districts: the severe heat storm caused severe flooding and power cuts on Thursday evening. Streets were washed away, houses had to be evacuated. There are currently numerous volunteer fire brigades present.

Heavy rainfall, overflowing streams and flooding keep fire brigades in central Carinthia on their toes. “A lot of firefighters are currently present in Kaning, Bad Kleinkirchheim and Radweg,” reports the LAWZ. According to the storm center, the highest alert level applies to parts of the Carinthian districts of Spittal an der Drau, Feldkirchen and St. Veit an der Glan.

Civil protection alarm again
“Civil alarms have gone off in Radenthein, Untertweng and Döbriach!”, the LAWZ reports. Residents are requested not to leave their homes and if necessary seek safety on the upper floors! There was also a power outage in some affected communities. Although there is no alarm in Bad Kleinkirchheim, people are still encouraged to stay away from streams and not to leave the house.

The fire brigade went outside to pump out several cellars and streets were also flooded. A total of 8 fire brigades with about 80 men are deployed. The water rescue service is also on standby.

Houses evacuated in Leoben in Krems
According to the first reports, there is a civil defense warning in the Leobengraben – there is a risk of a roadblock. The fire brigade had to evacuate houses. The Langalmtal would be closed off from the outside world because of a washed away road, just like Kaning in Radenthein. The Kleinkirchheimer Strasse (B88) and the Millstätter Strasse (B95) were also flooded in some places. The Gurk has overflowed between Gnesau and Pattergassen, but it is possible to drive past it slowly.

Michael Maier, mayor of Radenthein: “The Kaninger Landesstraße (L18) is closed and will remain so until tomorrow morning at the earliest!” Communities such as Gnesau and Zedlitzdorf are also affected by the storm. So far there have been no reports of injuries or missing persons.

Hail am Falkert
Locally, the thunderstorms will be very strong on Thursday evening and cause large amounts of rain and hail, such as on the Falkert. “There has never been so much hail on the Falkert. It hailed for a whole 20 minutes. The Falkert is completely white,” reports Birgit Bogensberger. “The greatest danger is small-scale flooding or mudslides,” says the Serious Weather Center (UWZ).
