A violent explosion took place in the center of Istanbul on Sunday afternoon. At least eight people were killed. The reason for the explosion is still unclear. But there are fears of an assassination attempt.
Images shared on social media showed people lying on the ground. The site of the blast, Istiklal Street, is a tourist attraction in the European part of the Turkish metropolis.
According to Istanbul Governor Ali Yerlikaya, many people were strolling through Istiklal Street at the time of the deadly incident. The state broadcaster TRT reports that rescue workers and the police have been deployed en masse to the scene.
