Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi wants to run for a Senate seat. The 85-year-old announced this on Friday. He has already promised double the minimum pension and high profile people in the government.
Berlusconi is currently a member of the European Parliament. After the end of the government under Prime Minister Mario Draghi, he could now return to the Senate. In the duel for the voters, Berlusconi has already promised to increase the minimum pension in Italy from 500 to 1,000 euros. He is also convinced that snap elections are “not a tragedy” and that a center-right cabinet will rule after September 25. “Our government will be made up of eminent individuals who will work competently and honestly,” Berlusconi said. In the centre-right alliance, the Fratelli d’Italia party is currently the strongest, with 22 percent of the vote according to polls. Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party currently has to make do with about eight percent. The League comes in at about 17 percent.
The only prime minister who has exhausted the legislature
Berlusconi was prime minister of Italy four times between 1994 and 2011. He is also the only prime minister to serve a full five-year term. His fourth government fell in 2011 after a series of scandals and his conviction for tax fraud.
