Europe has been ravaged by an extreme heat wave for weeks. Italian agriculture is now also feeling the consequences. In several regions of Italy, this year’s wine harvest has to be brought forward because of the above-average temperatures, otherwise the grapes risk drying out. Due to the acute water shortage, a decrease in wine production compared to previous years is also expected.
In the Italian agricultural region of Emilia Romagna, the start of this year’s wine harvest is scheduled for August 10. This is about two weeks earlier than usual compared to previous years. Industry experts expect a drop of up to 30 percent in white wine production and 15 percent in red wine production.
Livestock farming in Italy is also being hit by the effects of the ongoing heat wave. Milk production fell by 15 percent. The coldiretti agricultural association reported that the drought has already caused billions in damage to agriculture and is also negatively impacting the prices of agricultural products.
Financial support for those affected
Due to the drought that has lasted for months, a state of emergency has now been declared in five northern Italian regions. This will provide financial support to farmers and ranchers in the affected regions that are particularly hard hit by water shortages.
