Fish species are dying out – animals in Lake Neusiedler have almost run out of oxygen

Date:

The clock is ticking. Lake Neusiedler is heating up, many fish are dying.

The water level at the Neusiedler See is becoming critical. Professional fishermen also want a water supply. “It is the only correct measure to supply water artificially!”, state fisheries president Thomas Hoffmann backs the state’s plans. Fish species such as zander or pike are currently dying because there is not enough oxygen in the water for them.

The professional fishermen of Lake Neusiedler See collect the dead animals and remove them. However, due to the size of the lake, no general displacement like in Zicksee is possible, the chief of the state’s water management department said. Burgenland and the “Task Force Neusiedler See-Seewinkel”, Christian Sailer.

Sensitive species do not survive these temperatures
The high water temperature caused by the heat – on Saturday, according to the water portal of the Hydrographic Service Burgenland partly measured above 30 degrees Celsius – leads to a lower oxygen content in the lake. More sensitive fish species can’t handle that. Zander and sickle especially need cooler water and do not survive these temperatures.

The chairman of the Austrian Supervisory Board for Fisheries and Water Protection Helmut Belanyecz also has his say in the case at sea. He does not understand that conservationists are reluctant to be endowed with foreign water. “It is high time that the endangered Lake Neusiedler was preserved with a water supply from the Danube,” says Belanyecz. He sees no problem with raising the water level by about ten centimeters.
