Covid-related outages of doctors and licensed assistants can abruptly cancel long-scheduled appointments. This also happened in a town in the Burgenland district of Oberpullendorf, where a blood donation campaign had to be canceled due to staff shortages.
Whether after a traffic accident, a birth or for patients with a serious illness – in Austria a unit of blood is needed every 90 seconds. That’s almost 1000 IV bags a day.
action canceled
That is why, even in summer, the population is called upon to donate the precious elixir of life. However, not all announced blood donation campaigns can take place at this time. The action planned for August 28 in Deutsch Gerisdorf had to be cancelled. There is a lack of staff.
“There can be no emergency. However, often the absence of a doctor or a certified assistant, sometimes because of Covid, is enough to cause personnel changes and it is no longer possible to keep all agreements 100 percent,” explains Manuel Komosny of the Red Cross in Burgenland.
Anyone can donate
Despite the cancellation, anyone who wants to can donate blood. At www.gibdeinbestes.at or 0800/190 190 you will find appointments in the area for 18 to 70 year olds.
