An idyllic camping trip in a national park in the US state of Iowa ended in a bloodbath for the Schmidt family. Gunman Anthony Sherwin stormed into the tent and shot parents Tyler and Sarah (both 42), six-year-old daughter Lula and eventually himself. Only son Arlo (9) survived.
It is unclear why the 23-year-old wiped out almost the entire family. Investigators say he didn’t know her. The alleged perpetrator should have judged for himself afterwards, his body was found not far from the crime scene.
No connection with perpetrator
Adam Morehouse, Sarah Schmidt’s brother, told the Associated Press that the family had no connection to Sherwin: “It seems completely random.” He had no idea where the nine-year-old was at the time of the crime, but he’d been there on the camping trip anyway. He may have run away when the first shots were fired.
Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green wrote on Facebook that the boy was unharmed. A donation account has already been created for the nine-year-old. The national park where the family camped was closed after the incident. It is best known for its many caves and is a popular destination for holidaymakers and hikers.
