In a hotel in Kitzbühel, due to a technical defect, poisonous chlorine gas apparently escaped early on Sunday afternoon. As the fire department announced, emergency services were able to rectify the fault within two hours and ventilate the property. The gas had spread through the technical room.
The house technician present informed the manager of the fire brigade and disconnected the installation from the power supply. Initial measurements by the fire brigade showed an increased gas concentration, on which a team with special chemical protective suits was deployed. The affected area was cordoned off and ventilated.
More than 30 Florianis on site
“The cause of the error was then found and secured in the technical room with the help of another in-house technician. After further ventilation measures, the concentration of pollutants finally decreased and a stable situation was able to develop,” according to the city fire brigade. A total of 31 firefighters with seven vehicles, the Red Cross and the Kitzbühel police were deployed.
Chlorine gas is highly toxic and will irritate the respiratory tract and damage the lungs if inhaled. If it comes into contact with the mucous membrane, it forms corrosive acids and can therefore also damage the eyes and skin.
