After the death drama in the trendy bar Stern, Graz is in shock. After the forensic investigation is completed, clean-up work will take place in Sporgasse. Two people are still in intensive care.
After the fire on New Year’s Eve in a restaurant in Graz in the city center, the identity of the victim has now been established: it was a 21-year-old woman from the Mödling district in Lower Austria. She was probably visiting friends in the capital of Styria. The autopsy results are still pending.
The police are investigating
Police confirmed existing videos on social media showing people with sparklers or spray candles in front of the restaurant. “We are aware of these videos and are investigating them,” said spokesman Fritz Grundnig. This possible cause, as well as other negligent or intentional opportunities to start a fire, would be investigated and forensically examined.
Witness interviews are underway
The investigation into the completely burned-out restaurant has now been completed. The first witness interviews with only slightly injured local guests have already taken place, but not all are ready for questioning yet. One person remains in critical condition, Grundnig said. We continue to appeal for any potential additional witnesses to contact police and report their sightings.
The fire in the restaurant on Sporgasse broke out at the entrance on New Year’s Day around 4 a.m. and spread to the furniture and decorations. In addition to the fatal accident, 21 guests were injured, some very seriously. Three people required intensive care. A technical cause of the fire was ruled out on New Year’s Day.
