Verbundgesellschaft’s long-standing CEO, Walter Fremuth, died on July 20 at the age of 90. Born in Vienna in 1932, the Social Democrat has held several top positions in the banking and energy sectors over the course of his career.
In 1970 Fremuth became the first deputy governor of the Postspaarbank and from 1975 to 1979 he was deputy director general of the Girozentrale der Sparkassen.
He held the position of Director General of Österreichische Verkehrswirtschaft AG (later Verbundgesellschaft, today Verbund AG) from 1979 until his retirement in early 1994. From 1981 he also taught at the Vienna University of Economics and Business.
In his role as head of Verbund, Fremuth campaigned for the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant, which was ultimately never commissioned. The project for a hydroelectric power station in Hainburg was accompanied by mass protests.
