Attempts in vain – Schafbauer na Rissen: “Photos haunt me”

Date:

Marco Rabanser had to experience how nine of his animals died horribly on the Wazalm in the Tyrolean Wattental. Again a wolf is suspected. The 39-year-old is desperate and complains, “How am I supposed to explain this to my son?”

Field work is exhausting in this heat. But every other day Marco Rabanser drove into the Wattental and up to the Wazalm (1580 meters). A strenuous walk along the yoke to his sheep followed. He had nursed and cared for her from birth, cleaned her for exhibitions, and cared for her aches and pains. But all efforts were in vain – because of a veritable slaughter: On Friday, nine of his 45 animals lay dead or severely maimed and rattling on the alpine pasture. “Some of them I had to slaughter myself. Images that have haunted me ever since.”

Of the 132 sheep that five farmers brought to the Alm in the Tux Alps at the beginning of the summer, there are now 17. A wolf is believed to be the suspected culprit, according to DNA analysis expected Friday. “It could be the one that has raged in the Elbows area before,” Rabanser suspects.

Remaining animals now in the summer heat in the valley
As a result, all sheep have already been aborted. “But at home on the farm it is 10 degrees warmer, the other animals are suffering,” says the 39-year-old. He actually had a good feeling about the start of the alpine season: “We had hoped that shooting at the nearby military training ground at Lizum would keep the wolves at bay – a mistake.”

As with many sheep farmers, it is a hobby and side job for Rabanser. It’s gratifying when the 16-year-old son wants to follow in his footsteps. “He is fanatical about sheep farming and wept. How am I supposed to explain these incidents to him?” The sheep farmer is finally calling for political action.

Gahr: ‘Emergency removal must be allowed immediately’
The case is also called NR Hermann Gahr (ÖVP), who knows the person concerned. “There is no escaping emergency removals, alpine agriculture is on the verge of collapse.” Gahr is thinking of the Swedish model with pasture zones.
