Car set on fire – civil courage: ‘Couldn’t just drive past’

Date:

“I couldn’t just drive past it!” says Roland Palle, the firefighter who managed to extinguish the burning vehicle of the Dutch holiday family in time on Monday afternoon.

Film-ready scenes took place on the A10 towards Salzburg on Monday afternoon: It is not yet clear why the vehicle suddenly started burning. But the family was lucky. “I saw the smoke from afar!” Roland Palle describes the situation to “Krone”.

It was clear to him: “I couldn’t just drive by, I had to help!” Because the man is not only an employee of the municipality of Spittal an der Drau, but also a firefighter. And the family wasn’t the only lucky ones.

“Always have 4000 liters of water with me!”
“I just came back from the repair in Upper Austria in a sewer cleaning truck and it always has about 4,000 liters of water in it,” says Palle. And they were desperately needed. When Palle got to the burning vehicle, it was already fully engulfed in flames.

The desperate family at least tried to save the caravan and disconnected the two vehicles from each other. “I alerted the fire brigade and then started putting out the fire!” says the everyday hero. It’s not the first time he’s done this.

There was danger of explosion
The car could not be saved because the gas tank had already caught fire and was about to explode. The father and his daughters had to be taken to the hospital in Spittal an der Drau, but the Spittaler intervened to prevent worse. “I’m glad the situation went smoothly,” Palle said.
