A helicopter crashed into the sea on Thursday and sank on the Greek island of Euboea. Emergency services were still looking for the two missing people in the vehicle in the afternoon, news channel ERTnews reported. The accident happened during a storm. The poor weather conditions pose major challenges for the search teams.
The storm caused the sea to become cloudy, and floating debris caused by flooding would make the search much more difficult.
According to the TV channel, the spot where the helicopter crashed was about 50 to 60 meters deep; debris is difficult to locate at this depth.
The crashed aircraft is believed to be an Agusta Bell 109. The pilot worked for the Air Force and is considered very experienced. The station also showed a recording of the crash, but thick cloud and rain prevented the event from being clearly visible.
There have been heavy storms in the region since Wednesday. Many villages are cut off from the outside world due to destroyed roads. The helicopter was on its way to the Greek port city of Volos, ERTnews reports. There is currently no information on the cause of the crash.
